I am excited to see a new trend in professional product photography, or at least in jewelry photos for on-line stores and advertising. Finally the trend is shifting away from everything being shot on an all white background. Now it seems everyone wants a black background for their jewelry.
Why? It makes the jewelry pop ever so much more! Take a look at these two shots I did.

Our eyes automatically go to what is brightest in a photo. When you surround jewelry or a product with all white, where do your eyes go? That’s right, to the bright background. But when the background is dark, the product or jewelry becomes the bright spot in the shot.

Stay tuned for more on photographing on black, there’s a downside to that also! It has to do with the lighting…
