I thought I was prepared for a tour of China, I had my laptop and memory cards with a total of over 40 gigs of memory. That should be enough, or so I thought.
After 4 days, I was already out hunting for more storage space for all my images. You see, I was in China for a Tai Chi competition, and you know me, I can’t stop at just one image of a beautiful scene.
And I still had almost 2 weeks of sightseeing left.
I bought a couple of 8 gig flash drives, saved all the photos I could from the camera memory cards on both the computer and flash drives. It’s a good thing I double back-up, since a week later my hard drive on the computer failed! Fortunately, the good folks at Onyx were able to get my laptop up and running in just a couple of days. But that was after I got back home.
Now I had a lot of time and not so many photos to be able to take. This turned out to be a good thing. It made me think more about each photo, before I clicked and after it appeared on the back monitor. Was this a photo that needed to be taken, to be saved? So all right, I still have a few clunkers in the rest of the images, but I thought about the shot. I stopped shooting so randomly. I started to see the sights of China as more than just a rectangle. I enjoyed the trip without having to record every moment.
So while you should be prepared with plenty of memory cards before you travel, be prepared to enjoy the journey also, sans camera. And if you want to see more photos, check out this site which I will be updating as I go thru the over 3000 images!
